The Kiln Sitters

Marianne Chénard, Carole Epp, and Brendan Tang sit down with artists and makers of all ages from across Canada to shed light on the contemporary ceramic scene. You may have thought Canada was all polar bears and maple syrup, but we’re serving up a heaping dose of artists you should really know about. From the coast to the prairies, the big cities, and small communities; we’re here to find out what makes the Canadian ceramic scene so vibrant, diverse, cutting edge, and relevant.

Brendan is a studio artist whose ceramic work explores issues of identity and the hybridization of our material and non-material culture. He is based in Vancouver, BC where he is an assistant professor at Emily Carr University.

Marianne is a sculptor who makes installations, earth art, and performance that address issues of climate change and social responsibility. She is based in Montreal, QC.

Carole is an artist, curator, writer, community builder, and teacher, who is the founder of Musing about Mud and co-founder of the Canadian ceramic collective Make and Do. She is based in Saskatoon, SK.

 

Trade Secret

Adam Chau sits down with two artists, writers, or curators each week to discuss contemporary issues in art, craft, and design. Each guest drives the conversation, drawing on the episode's central theme by using their own experience working in the arts. The podcast highlights that a single issue can have multiple perspectives and that ultimately, we should disclose our trade secrets.

Adam is an artist based in Cold Spring, NY. His research looks into the combination of digital manufacturing and traditional ceramic techniques.

 

 

For Flux Sake

Matt and Rose Katz of the Ceramics Materials Workshop will answer your burning questions about clay and glaze. In each episode co-host Kathy King will present listener submitted questions that will be answered in a comical, but also insightful way. This show will have you laughing and learning about the chemistry behind ceramics in no time.

Kathy is a studio artist in the Boston area and the Director of the Ceramics Program at the Office for the Arts at Harvard in Allston, MA. Rose and Matt are based in Epsom, NH where they run the Ceramic Materials Workshop, an online platform for learning ceramic chemistry.

Join Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy and Alex Anderson as they discuss the aesthetics of optimism in contemporary ceramics. Humor, cuteness, and the decorative will be jumping off points for conversations with young professionals of color who are shaping the field today.

Angelik is a New York and Los Angeles-based curator and writer focusing on ceramics. Her current research investigates the subversive power of humor, cuteness, and leisure as tools of protest.

Alex is a ceramic artist based in Los Angeles, CA. His work has been exhibited internationally including venues such as The Long Beach Museum of Art and American Museum of Ceramic Art.

Tales of a Red Clay Rambler

The Tales of a Red Clay Rambler features interviews with artists and culture makers from around the world. The podcast started in 2012 and has a back catalogue of over 385 episodes, featuring discussions on creative problem solving, models for art education, and the nuts and bolts of making a living as an artist. Join host Ben Carter on his weekly show as he talks with contemporary makers about their lives and creative practice.

Ben is an artist, educator and author based in Howell, NJ. He blends floral motifs used in Appalachian quilting with the decorative language of historical ceramics to enliven the surfaces of his functional pottery.
